Wūnderbar! The Bavarian celebration of Oktoberfest began over 200 years ago in 1810 and has since been adopted as an annual tradition all around the world. Here in Minnesota, there is no better place to celebrate Oktoberfest and German heritage alike than our very own August Schell’s Brewing Company in New Ulm, MN – which is famously dubbed “the most German town in America”. Your Local Gurus want to give you an opportunity to take in the tradition of Oktoberfest without booking an international flight to Munich, so we’ve created a one-of-a-kind day trip to New Ulm, Minnesota that features the rich history of that area, an opportunity to enjoy the authentic Oktoberfest celebration at the historic August Schell’s Brewing Company, all while enjoying a wide-range of authentic German fare throughout the day.

Our day will begin in Roseville, where your GetKnit Gurus will be excitedly awaiting your arrival and ready to welcome you with a friendly “Guten Tag” and a hot cup of coffee . Once everyone has arrived, we will sit back and relax while our luxury coach bus travels to the historic city of New Ulm, MN. During our drive, we will get to enjoy an authentic German Streusel from Aki’s Bakehaus in Minneapolis for breakfast. At time of registration, you will get to choose between your choice of blueberry, raspberry, apple, or cherry streusel.

Upon arriving in New Ulm, we will embark on a short but informative German heritage sightseeing tour of some of its most iconic landmarks around town. Our first stop will be the Hermann Monument, or as locals affectionately refer to him as “Hermann the German”. Standing proudly as America’s ultimate symbol of German heritage, the 102-foot Hermann Monument mirrors Germany’s famous Hermannsdenkmal and anchors New Ulm’s identity as a bastion of immigrant pioneer history. While you can no longer ascend Hermann’s stairs – we will still have the opportunity to view this monument from the hillside on which it stands. Next we will venture to German Park. Here we will get to pay homage to the German-Bohemian Immigrant Monument, a poignant tribute honoring the lively traditions and enduring spirit of the area’s 19th-century pioneer families, and explore the beautiful European-style sunken garden that mirrors the town’s Old World roots. From here, we will take a short 3-block walk through town to New Ulm’s Glockenspiel. This iconic landmark stands 45-feet tall and if we time it right, we should arrive as the clock strikes NOON and plays it’s melodic German folk tunes, as a series of rotating mechanical figurines emerge to tell the story of the city’s early pioneer history and enduring cultural heritage. As we enjoy the “show” we will also enjoy an authentic German soft pretzel from Aki’s Bakehaus, as a mid-day appetizer to our lunch at the fest.

A short jaunt across town will deliver us to the main attraction of the day – August Schell’s Oktoberfest Celebration! Founded in 1860 by August Schell, a German immigrant, the historic August Schell Brewing Company stands as America’s second-oldest family-owned brewery and a cornerstone of Minnesota’s brewing heritage. The legendary estate truly comes alive during its annual Schell’s Oktoberfest celebration! After a brief quarter mile walk up its wooded drive, we will make a quick entrance into the historic grounds and be set free to enjoy! As part of your ticket package – you will be given tickets good for three pints of their traditional Märzen Oktoberfest (or any of Schell’s other featured beers and beverages) to be enjoyed at your leisure throughout our time at the fest. Additionally, you will receive tickets good for one of their classic grilled German bratwurst with sauerkraut for lunch. While at the fest, we’ll have a chance to take-in their festive Biergarten, enjoy live music, and play games…all while we enjoy some traditional German food, and flowing steins of their award-winning, Märzen lager.

After our afternoon of prosting with our pints at Schell’s Oktoberfest, we will round-out our German-centric day trip with celebratory dinner and drinks at the historic New Ulm Turner Hall. This cornerstone of local lore opened in 1856 and proudly operates the oldest continuous bar (and gymnasium!) in the state of Minnesota. Here we will enjoy a private space in their Heritage Room, on the lower level of this historic complex. To start off our evening, we will be treated to our choice of beer, house wine, rail drink or nonalcoholic beverage paired with a garden salad and one of their famous Reuben balls, for an appetizer. For our dinner buffet we’ll enjoy a mouthwatering spread of German fare featuring their famous “Turner” Bavarian ribs, pork schnitzel, spätzle, German potato salad, vegetables, red cabbage, and sauerkraut! To round out this feast, we’ll have delicious Black Forest brownies and coffee for dessert. Ein wahrer Gaumenschmaus – a German phrase that means “a true feast for the palate”!

As the polka music fades and the steins drain, we’ll head home with full hearts, tired feet, and a lifetime of Gemütlichkeit – a German noun that describes a deep sense of warmth, friendliness, and good cheer.
