The great state of Minnesota is beautiful during all seasons, but come Autumn, when the air is crisp and the trees begin to turn fiery colors of orange, yellow, and red, the Land of Lakes really shines. We are excited to present the third installment of our beloved ‘Fall Foliage’ event series, where we’ll explore the stunning Mississippi River Valley. Join us for a full day of fall fun as we take in the majesty of this region by bus, train, boat, and foot.
Our day will begin at historic Union Depot in St. Paul MN, where your GetKnit Gurus will be waiting to greet you with a hot cup of coffee and pastries. From there, we will hop aboard the Empire Builder Amtrak Train where our group will have reserved seats together as our train weaves its way down the river valley to Red Wing, MN. We’ll hop off at the Red Wing Train Depot, where their weekly farmers market will be waiting for us to explore. Upon arrival, we’ll have free time to shop the market, go on a self-guided walking tour of historic Red Wing, visit the Red Wing Shoe Store and Museum, or stroll along the beautiful river. If getting out and about in nature is more your speed, after an hour of free time you’ll have the option to hop aboard our charter bus head just outside of city center to visit iconic Barn Bluff which is one of the best-known natural features along the upper Mississippi River. Here, we will hike to the peak to take in the splendid views of downtown Red Wing and the river.
After our hike, we will head back to downtown Red Wing and meet up with the rest of the group for a gourmet lunch of pub fare at The Staghead Gastropub. Choose between the Staghead Burger, Club Sandwich, BLT, Chickpea Burger, Chicken Leg Confit Salad, or the Brussels Sprout Salad.
After we’ve eaten our fill, we’ll hop aboard our motor coach make our way south down the Great River Road to Lake City, MN. Here, we’ll board the Pearl of the Lake on Lake Pepin for a 90-minute scenic boat cruise. “Pearl of the Lake” is a modern-day replica of the grand riverboats that traveled on the Mississippi River in the 1800’s. True to tradition, her only means of propulsion is the twin paddle wheels in the stern.
After our cruise, we will continue south down-river to Wabasha, MN where we will make a visit to the National Eagle Center. At the Center, we will have access to their interactive displays and resident eagles. During our free time to explore, you’ll also be able to check out their riverwalk with hopes of catching a glimpse of the wild eagles that are native to the area.
Next, we will continue onto beautiful Winona, MN. As we pull into town, we will take the winding mile-and-a-half road up the bluff side, and immerse ourselves in the rich oak savanna atop Garvin Heights scenic overlook. After we’ve soaked in the views, we’ll travel into downtown Winona to finish off our epic day at Island City Brewery Company. Here, we will be treated to a pint of beer for happy hour before local favorite, Blooming Grounds Cafe, caters in a delicious dinner for us to enjoy. We will enjoy a starter of homemade butternut squash soup followed by our choice of pulled pork, pulled chicken, or carrot-beet-and-garbanzo bean sandwiches with an array of hearty sides. Full and happy we’ll hop back onto our bus and head back home to Union Depot in St. Paul, MN where our days adventures began.
We think you’ll agree that this day-trip will leave you with beautiful photos, wonderful memories, and a renewed appreciation for all that our diverse state has to offer.
