Lake Superior’s legendary shores are home to many iconic locations, diverse topographies, and historic landmarks. On this GetKnit Get-together, you will have the opportunity to fully experience not only the pristine waters of the world’s largest freshwater lake by both kayak and boat, but also to hike the shoreline and take in the breathtaking views from iconic Split Rock Lighthouse State Park and Canal Park alike.
Our day will begin bright and early as we gather in Roseville where your GetKnit Gurus will be excitedly awaiting your arrival with coffee and donuts from A Baker’s Wife Pastry Shop. From there, a luxury coach bus will whisk us away to beautiful Split Rock Lighthouse State Park nestled along the rocky shores of Lake Superior. As we head north, you’ll be able to kick back and relax, and enjoy a buttery ham and cheese croissant, perfect to get us fueled up for the adventures that lay ahead.
Upon arrival, we will be introduced to our experienced partners, Day Tripper of Duluth, who will be leading us throughout our morning adventures on the water. As a group we will head down to the water’s edge to gear-up and receive a safety briefing to ensure everyone feels comfortable and secure. We will then pair off and take to the sea in our tandem kayaks for an in-water lesson before heading out to the vast waters of Lake Superior. From there, we will take a two hour tour of the shoreline, taking in the views of the sheer cliffs, endless water, the historic Split Rock Lighthouse, and if we’re lucky we’ll get a glimpse of the Madeira shipwreck, wrecked on November 28th, 1905.
After our epic adventure on the big lake, we will refuel with a fresh lakeside lunch, catered into the park by Northern Waters Smokehaus, who have specialized in smoked fish, handcrafted smoked meats, and unique deli sandwiches since 2001. Lunch will feature a boxed meal featuring your choice of one of their delectable sandwiches. At time of registration, you’ll be able to choose between their Cajun Finn: Haus-smoked Cajun salmon, green onion cream cheese, roasted red peppers, pepperoncini & lettuce on stirato; Cold Turkey: Haus-smoked sage maple turkey breast (free-range and MN raised), lettuce, Swiss & our very special craisen walnut mayo. Served on stirato; Pastrami Mommy: smoked pastrami, pepperoncini, provolone, lettuce, mustard & mayo on rye; the Sitka Sushi: Gravlax (cured salmon), pickled ginger, cilantro, cucumbers, shredded cabbage, sesame oil, wasabi mayo, and Sriracha on a hero roll; the Gorilla: Haus-smoked Minnesota Berkshire ham, Swiss cheese, baby greens, Haus mustard & mayo on rye; and the Fuzzy Bunny: Green onion cream cheese, roasted red peppers, cucumbers, shredded cabbage, tomatoes, onion, lettuce, cilantro, black pepper & a shot of sesame oil on stirato. All accompanied with potato chips and a cookie from Duluth’s very own Positively 3rd Street Bakery. After we have had a re-energizing lunch and short break, we will head up for a self-guided tour of the iconic Split Rock Lighthouse and its historic grounds. Here we will have some free time to explore the grounds, take a hike of the state park, or explore the gift shop and visitors center.
Once we complete our adventures at Split Rock, we will head back down the shore to Duluth, MN. Here we’ll have the opportunity to “choose our own adventure” in Canal Park. Take a stroll along the lake walk, watch the rise and fall of the quintessential lift bridge, pop into a brewery for a beer, visit a local distillery, or do some shopping at one of the many shops in this renowned area of the city.
After our free time, we will come back together and board the Vista Fleet’s Queen for a breathtaking two-long dinner cruise on Lake Superior. On the boat, we will be able to enjoy a beer, wine, or cocktail as our Captain navigates the graceful waters along the stunning coastline. Once we get our sea legs under us, local favorite, OMC Smokehouse will treat us to a hearty BBQ dinner of brisket, pulled pork, and chicken with an array of delicious sides.
Taking in the views of Lake Superior from both water and land, exploring iconic Split Rock Lighthouse, and enjoying some local flavors of the North Shore, we think you will agree that this is truly a “Superior” day full of exploration.
